Tips for Brochure Design – Part 1
If you’re designing your own brochure, the best advice we at Speedinprint.com can give you is to follow a few simple yet effective guidelines for a professional brochure that will deliver the message you want.
- First and foremost, what is the message you want to deliver? Copy is king. Your brochure should have a clear message, otherwise what’s the point? Make sure it’s got meaning and resonates in your target audience’s mind in a way they will understand. Include a ‘call to action’ and make it easy for the reader to contact you for further information with contact details such as a phone number, website or a contact address!
- Colour – If you’re printing a colour brochure, pick your colours wisely (unless you’re advertising that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow of course – then feel free to run wild!). Stick with your brand colours or colours that will complement so that your audience understands the consistency.
- Fonts – Again, remain consistent to your brand. It’s easy to lose reader interest with just one, but extensive use of fonts can make it very difficult to read and will upset the flow.
- Imagery – Make sure that the images and artwork you use (or provide to your printer) are of a high quality. If you are including photographs, avoid placing them across the folds of the brochure.
- Paper – There’s nothing worse than picking up a brochure printed on toilet roll or tracing paper unless that’s your aim! Heavier paper looks and feels professional and inspires confidence in the customer. Cheap and flimsy paper looks…. well…. cheap and flimsy. Uncoated recycled paper feels ‘earthy’ and may suit an environmentally aware company. A matt laminated coated finish will suit a luxury brand.
- Proof read – Proof read, proof read, proof read. Read it at least 3 times and then ask someone else to check it. It’s an incredibly important rule because as the old printer adage goes: “However urgent it is, if it’s wrong there’s always time for a re-print.” So check your work before you sign it off and not after it’s been printed!
