Tips for Choosing Images for Print
03 November 2010
Great pictures are worth a thousand words, so it makes sense to choose them carefully ensuring that they are working for you and your business. Whether they are being incorporated within a printed folder, brochure or any other marketing material, check out our tips for choosing and supplying images to your designers and printers!
1. SIZE MATTERS! Photographs and other graphics are made up of pixels. Choose an image with a high number of pixels. Generally an image size of 2 to 3 MB or 300dpi is the standard and will give a much cleaner, crisp finish to your images.
2. Make sure you adhere to copyright laws. It is an offense to copy or adapt a piece of copyrighted artwork or image and the original creator has a right to be identified and permission to use the piece must always be sought. Go to the following website for further advice:

3. Don’t download an image from the internet and expect it to be of a high quality after printing. The chances are you will be very disappointed with the outcome as the image will most likely be sub-standard.
4. If you are supplying the artwork, choose a format that the printers or designers can work with; for instance an EPS file, a JPEG or a TIFF file will enable your designer to produce the best possible result for you. Note that a PNG file are for use on the web only and will not print well.
EPS files will allow your vector images to be enlarged without any loss of quality. An EPS file also works well for a spot colour print effect on your print job.
TIFF files are best employed to store high quality graphics ie: digital photographs and there is no loss of quality or data corruption.
JPEG files are great for use in website design, but the nature of a compressed file may lead to a slight loss of definition during the print process
5. For colour images we always use the CMYK colour process (also known as the four colour process) and not the additive colour model or RGB (Red Green Blue). The images may look more attractive on screen with RGB however the CMYK process will give a more accurate result after printing.
